Are You Kidding?
I have the great good fortune to have loads of kiddos coming my way. Now that school is out, my grown children and younger friends are coming to visit with children in tow. My granddaughters can fly without parents, so they will be dropping in without their growns. How about you? Are you ready? It is easy to be prepared for short visitors, and a lot more fun if we are!
A collection of sunscreen, bug spray, band aids/salve is a must; a stock pile of inexpensive hats, life jackets and water shoes come in handy too. While canoes and kayaks are available at rental shops, old fashioned inner tubes are inexpensive and easy to deflate and store. Have non-television related activities on hand , some version of monopoly, paints and paper, playing cards and, in our case, a fold up ping-pong table on the porch (the last time my girls came down with their little friends, they didn't choose the TV once)! In preparation for picnics, boil several chicken breasts in salt/peppered stock ahead of time for great sliced chicken sandwiches and salads. Zip to the farmer's market for fresh lettuce, crispy green beans and fresh corn on the cob. Lay in some cold water melon and assorted fruit, carrot sticks, celery, potatoes, peanut butter, bread, yogurt, non-candy cereal, baked chips and pop sickles, boxed juices, milk, spicy mustard, Hellman's mayo. Grab some capers to add to a refreshing dinner of niciose salad- boiled potato, lightly steamed green beans, bib lettuce, thin slices of chicken, spicy mustard vinaigrette dressing- a surprising taste thrill for all concerned!
The Hill Country is such a great place to enjoy the summer; there are so many opportunities to enjoy our natural waterways. Swimming at Blue Hole in Wimberley, and up at Hamilton Pool, children and grands alike can enjoy a picnic and wonderful respites from the heat. A float down the Guadalupe or Comal can be a great morning adventure. Plan an afternoon playing games together, then dinner, then off to the Corral Theatre in Wimberley for first run family movies, or a great live production at the EmilyAnn. The possibilities are endless!
