Las Flores de Muchos Colores Me Gustan a Mi.

This year I seem to be obsessed with colorful flowers.  I keep coming home with bulbs and plants, many of which will probably end up as deer feed, but I haven't been able to help myself.  Seedlings and perennials in our wildflower field appear to be growing double time - thrilling!  Before we know it, they will be blooming, bees will be buzzing, and the cameras will be clicking overtime.   It is time to get kitchen gardens and flower pots started, and to think about what can be done to get our outdoor environments ready for spring.

Winter months can be hard on outdoor living spaces.  The sun shines directly through leafless trees and temperatures vary wildly.  Wind whips around and Juniper pollens collect in thick layers on everything. Outdoor furniture and fabrics look dull, and many winter hardy plants may be horribly damaged.  All in all, some action is definitely necessary before company comes.

Cleaning and shifting things around works magic - this is the perfect opportunity to start anew!  Take the space down to bare bones, removing clutter and faded pillows; put all pots, planted or otherwise, off to one side.  Clean from the top of the porch to the ground.  In my case, wooden furniture always needs cleaning and sealing.  Now for the fun part!  Stand back and take a long look at the area.   Shift the furniture, even a bit, to give a fresh feel.  Look at your colors and freshen your fabrics.  Where would a blast of green or color be a blessing?  Haul it, pot it and place it!  Be sure to prepare at least a few containers that could be used handily indoors when needed.

With a fresh porch or picnic area ready for neighbors and friends, spiced teas, floral garnishes and fresh grilled foods come to mind.  (Recently I read of a delightful lemon cake with sugared flowers on top!)  Maybe plant some mints and edible flowers like pansies, nasturtium, and culinary lavender in the kitchen garden?  Ahh, Spring Fever- enjoy!
