The Goose Is Getting Fat

Well, not only the goose is getting fat.  The holiday season begins with Halloween candy and, for some of us, goes downhill from there- and why not?  Not withstanding people who have diabetes or other life threatening problems, why not just go with the flow?   It is, after all, the holidays, and we are supposed to eat, drink and be merry- right?  Bah-Humbug to those California-types who don't eat potatoes, butter or Blue Bell!  Out of my way to anyone jogging down my street or biking in my lane.  Huh?

Back in the real world, I have to say that I think the national obsession with fitness is more than a fad; it has become a lifestyle choice for millions of people nationwide- and a healthy one.  What does this mean for toffee lovers like me?
It means that I need to listen up.  While I do not see myself becoming a strict conformist to any diet, I do think that there is a way to have a bountiful Thanksgiving without breaking too many common sense rules.

First of all, bounty can be celebrated in so many fulfilling ways.  Focus on the whole picture rather than just the food, as Thanksgiving plans take shape.  It is amazing how a warm welcome, a beautiful environment, and good company fills us up as we express gratitude for all of our blessings.  Keep dinner simple with juicy roast turkey, vegetarian tamales (in lieu of that butter-filled dressing), "real" cranberry sauce with orange zest, a huge fruit salad, and fresh steamed greens.  Make dessert portions small and delicious.  Decaffeinated teas and coffees have been perfected and can make outstanding holiday spiced drinks.  Hey, make a point of taking in the views with your family and friends.  When I focus on the beauty of this area, I feel overwhelmed- like I have already eaten too much chocolate pie. That's a start!
